A House for La Divina

On December 2, 1923, Maria Anna Sophia Cecilia Kalogeropoulou was born in Manhattan, New York. The girl whose vocal virtuosity and acting brilliance would elevate her to become the ultimate diva of lyrical theatre, the woman who revolutionised opera, was Maria Callas.

In homage to her enduring legacy, the world’s inaugural Maria Callas Museum, situated in a meticulously preserved four-story inter-war building, invites visitors to delve into her extensive work and illustrious artistic journey as an extraordinary performer. The museum showcases a collection of objects, videos, texts and rare audio documents that intricately present the story of her life and career. From her early days in Greece to her illustrious international career and iconic roles, the Maria Callas Museum presents facets of her social life, personality, pivotal moments and the influential individuals in her life. The remarkable collection encompasses items such as her photo album (1947-1959), performance costumes, personal clothing, correspondences, posters, programmes, telegrams, personal effects, records, CDs, books, magazines and paintings, providing a comprehensive look into her extraordinary life and the enduring legacy she bequeathed.

The museum’s primary objectives include introducing her artistic persona and accomplishments as an iconic artist to diverse audiences in Greece and beyond. It aims to emphasise the distinctive aesthetic and technical elements that rendered her unparalleled, shedding light on her personality beyond the myths. The museum seeks to elucidate the enduring uniqueness that defines her legacy by collecting, preserving, conserving and interpreting material and intangible evidence associated with her life. Moreover, it aspires to serve as an inspiration for younger generations. As aptly noted by the Italian tenor Giuseppe Di Stefano, “It is enough to hear her once to never forget her.”
