Ionian Film Office
The Film Office of the Ionian Region Administrative is attracting more film and television productions contributing to the overall artistic developments in the region. It is no coincidence that Nia Vardalos chose the beautiful island of Corfu to begin shooting the My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 on July 5, 2022.
Three, two, one…because the world of film goes to the Ionian Islands
The Ionian islands are places of unique beauty and culture with modern infrastructure. The people are the embodiment of hospitality. For these reasons, the islands have been some of the most dynamic travel destinations for decades. The region has become a focal point for small and large film productions throughout the year, making the Ionian Region one of the most coveted and challenging film locations internationally. The landscape of the Ionian islands is in itself a challenge and invitation for every Greek and (mainly) international film production. As directors, writers and producers point out, the physical characteristics of the islands' mountainous, lowland and coastal areas are ideal for the narrative requirements of scripts. The varied terrain is timelessly beautiful. Combined with the region's mix of traditional and modern architecture, the islands become a cinematographer's dream. The Ionian Sea is unique in colour and tranquil for much of the year. The islands boast stunning beaches, distinguishing them from others in Greece. Their steep western coasts impress with enchanting coves that have become iconic, such as the famous shipwreck in Zakynthos.
Filming at the Ionian Islands...
The Ionian region offers numerous filming locations: beaches, marinas, ports, fortresses, palaces, mansions, churches, cathedrals, monasteries and archaeological sites. Olive groves, forests, vineyards and scenic-traditional villages are extensive. Everything is easily accessible from airports on four of the larger islands. Accommodations include hotels and rental properties such as stunning villas and apartments. Local restaurants and catering provide excellent gastronomy. Transportation services include auto and boat rentals. Overall, the islands have ideal living and working conditions for film productions, their crews and equipment.
The climate is mild, even in winter, assuring outdoor shooting without sudden changes in the weather. For four centuries, the inhabitants of the Ionian islands have become accustomed to European culture. It is evident in the social and artistic DNA of their communities. Each island has its distinct dialect infused with varied nuances of musicality. Beyond ordinary daily activities, the islands are constant hosts to the arts and culture. Film crews can pull from a healthy pool of musicians, singers, dancers, poets and actors to complement their productions.
Finally, the Ionian islands have qualified, English-speaking professionals in the film and audiovisual industries. Most are graduates of the Department of Audio and Visual Arts programme at the University of Ionia. Accolades include the British series, The Durrells of Corfu (2014 - 2018), for which The European Film Commission awarded Corfu 'the best location for filming in Europe' in 2018.
Films and documentaries such as Captain Corelli's Mandolin, The Treasures of Zakynthos, and Lefkada: Lost in the Ionian Sea deliver the beauty and uniqueness of Ionia into homes around the world. More recently and during the operation of the Ionian Film Office, the erotic-psychological 8 episode thriller 42°C was filmed in Corfu in the summer of 2020, as well as the Maestro series of the popular director and actor Christoforos Papakaliatis in Paxos and Corfu which will be screened soon as well as various historical documentaries. Other productions are in the works, including a film by Giannis Smaragdis about the life and work of Ioannis Kapodistrias.

The diversity and harmony of nature, the architectural heritage, the imprint of our long history as a crossroads of cultures, the open character and professionalism of the inhabitants, and the collective knowledge, expertise and human resources at the University of Ionia combine and create an incredible environment for producers."
