The former abode of this great, 19th-century political figure is a living museum.

In the centre of Old Town Kavala’s square, a statue of a man mounted on a horse demands attention. The likeness is that of Mehmet Ali, founder of the last Egyptian dynasty. Directly behind stands a historic mansion, the home of Mehmet until the age of thirty, whereupon he departed for Egypt to take up his rulership.

Built in 1780, the mansion, a waqf (Arabic: an inalienable, charitable endowment under Islamic law) property of the Egyptian state, combined simplicity and grandeur, characteristics of Ottoman-period architecture. With panoramic views of the surrounding area, the spacious property housed many in various roles. The ground floor incorporated kitchens and stables.

The second storey contained accommodations for a family with separate facilities for men and women and a hammam. A walk through the estate’s gardens provides opportunities to discover unique details, including a part of the tomb of Mehmet Ali’s mother preserved on site.
