An Aerial Work of Art

Mykonos is captured in an airport masterpiece, where the Cycladic light, powerful winds, and limitless white hues are beautifully portrayed.

As a portal between origins and destinations, the airport serves as an endless wellspring of emotions, embodying both the beginning and end of a shared narrative. It is a space where time momentarily suspends, granting travellers the emotional freedom to perceive a destination as an abstract concept.

Guided by this profound understanding, K-Studio meticulously crafted the redesign of the JMK Mykonos airport in 2021. By deconstructing traditional elements contributing to the beauty of the colour white – studying them – and translating them through a contemporary choreography, the airport becomes a new vessel for the traditions and materiality of Mykonos. Simultaneously, the lives of its visitors add their part.

Constantly travelling between Athens and Mykonos, artist Yiorgos Kordakis has, over the years, captured the island in its varied manifestations. His creative nature has prompted him to focus his attention beyond the structure of the new airport, emphasising spaces created by light and shadows. Together with Dimitris Karampatakis of K-Studio, it was not long before they envisioned the airport as a powerful setting for a completely new narrative, further expanding the concept of architectural design.

Fraport Greece management, with a deep cultural awareness and subtle involvement, allowed the creative team the freedom to delve into the structure and transcend into new art forms – aiming to elevate the airport's connection with the island. The result is a series of photographs capturing this incredible transformation, highlighting a new kind of architecture that has the power to shape thoughts and emotions.
