Legend tells that Chalki is named for its ancient copper mines and takes its beauty from the gods.

Southwest of Rhodes is a small island of reputation. In antiquity, the island played host to queen Aretanassa, later to the Knights of St John. Known as “the island of peace and friendship,” Chalki is especially popular with youth. Mythical titans, Dorians, Arabs and Genoese tried to claim Chalki for themselves, but the Chalkians ultimately succeeded. Their love for its beauty will become yours too.

Upon arrival, the eye is captivated by the colours of Niborio (also known as Emporeio), built like an amphitheatre around the natural harbour. It is a traditional settlement characterised by stone mansions, old churches, tavernas, shops and other quaint accommodations, an image from the past that remains intact today. A ten-minute walk from the village is Pontamos. With crystal-clear water, it is the most popular beach with accommodations for added comfort on the island.

For a bit more privacy, there are little coves nearby. Kania, Gyali, Tracheia, Ftenagia and Areta are accessible by boat or car for those who enjoy beach crawling. The island’s relatively small size allows for timely visits to its sites, even on foot. With an area of 2,200 square metres, the mediaeval castle of Chalki is culturally rich and includes the church of Agios Nikolaos, impressive for its size. Another must visit is the culturally-important Monastery of Agios Ioannis, which hosts a celebration on August 29th with lamb, oven-baked potatoes and traditional Chalkitikes Makarounes (handmade pasta).

A wonderful time to experience the customs and traditions of Chalki is during the celebration of Easter. At 3 AM, the locals celebrate the resurrection and burn an effigy in the churchyard. In September, the island celebrates the Chalki Music Festival - Dimitris Kremastinos with acclaimed musicians from the Athens State Orchestra and other countries.
