Ionian’s Little Secret
One of the best-kept secrets on Zakynthos lies just off-shore of the coastal village of Agios Sostis. It’s a beautiful isle with its own distinct history, though it shares the same name as its onshore counterpart. It was attached to mainland Zakynthos until an earthquake in 1633. The result was the verdant, earthly-little paradise sometimes referred to as Cameo. It’s connected to Agios Sostis village on the mainland by a wooden bridge, making for an exotic, almost Caribbean atmosphere. The isle sports a chapel, several small caves, a beach with crystalline waters, and a beach bar. The village on the other end of the bridge provides everything you might need: from boats to rent and accommodation, to tavernas and cafés. What’s more, the iconic beach of Laganas, one of the most important spawning grounds for loggerhead sea turtles in Greece and the Mediterranean, is just two kilometres away.
