Hiker’s Haven

The best way to get to know and explore a place is on foot.

Of all the Greek islands, Samos offers the most hiking trails: 40-marked routes totalling 260 km, from easy to challenging, through magical forests that sometimes lead to deserted beaches and exotic waterfalls to centuries-old monasteries and tiny, traditional tavernas. During the summer months, there are three recommended trails to explore. The first begins in Potami at the 11th-century Church of the Metamorphosis tou Sotiros. It is a 20-minute hike under the shade of plane trees, among dragonflies and a chorus of cicadas, leading to three waterfalls. The second is a 65-minute hike alongside cedar and cypresses from Potami beach to Megalo Seitani for a refreshing dip at this peaceful, white-sanded beach. Finally, in the village of Kosmadei, 670-metres above sea level is the third trail. This 1.5-hour-long trek leads to the wild beauty of Kakoperatos gorge and the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi. On the way back, stop at ‘St Antonakak’ taverna to sip on Samian wine paired with goat’s cheese from local farmers.
