Out of a Dream

When you see Molyvos for the first time, you’ll pinch yourself! In the moment, you won’t realise it. But, it’s inevitable. Then, consciously, you’ll allow the place to work its magic on all of your senses, all at once. This village is unlike any other. Its beauty is unparalleled; bewildered, you won’t believe your eyes. Surely, you must be dreaming! Open your eyes and see the houses – no two doors are the same colour– tiled rooftops stop a hair’s breadth from the sea. There are mansions with magnificent gables, a picturesque harbour, and some of the most beautiful-cobbled streets in the world, awash with wisteria and bougainvillea.

Breathe deeply, there’s much to admire: the impressive, well-preserved Genoese castle, one of the eastern MED’s finest, churches with neoclassical architecture, the public gallery, and the Komninakis-Krallis mansion (home to the School of Fine Arts). Taste grilled sardines, fresh-baked bread, fried ’ladotyri cheese’, stuffed onions, ‘lakerda‘ (pickled fish eaten as meze in the Balkans and Middle East), ouzo, and ‘galaktoboureko‘ –the best cream pie you’ll ever taste– at Balkonaki. Then, head to the Eftalou hot springs; you’ll come out feeling reborn. Next, find any one of the traditional cafés, order a Greek coffee with a fine head, and settle back for a stunning sunset; a moment not to miss. Nothing is amiss if you decide to stay all evening – if you don’t want to be anywhere else, except here. We get it. Your stay in Molyvos may seem like a dream, but it will become painfully real when you have to leave.
